That sentiment is so on point. The short answer or response is that Karma is a cunt. That more than any other reason is why I do and act the way I do. The other big part is that it was how I was raised. My parents taught me right from wrong and to help. Even now, years away from the Catholic Church or any christian religion, I still have a copy of the prayer of St Francis on the wall next to my desk. “Let me seek not so much to be consoled as to console…To be understood as to understand… It is in giving that we receive”.
The paradigm has shifted. A recent Pew Poll indicated that for the first time in 50 plus years people feel that the generation after them, their children, will not be as well off as they are. More important in that polling, when asked if they would be willing to sacrifice to make their children’s’ lives better, the majority responded by saying no.
The level of greed and self importance that has overtaken our society is amazing. We can lay the blame on the Reagan years of greed is good. We could lay the blame on the lack of critical thinking being taught in the public schools. We could blame the lack of moral authority due to the Clinton years and the sex scandals in the churches. It doesn’t really matter.
The paradigm need to swing back. Will it take another 9/11 style attack? A political assassination ? Some other national trauma? I don’t know. But people who care need to come together and start a dialogue soon.
